Part-time Community Health Workers Overview Job Title: Community Health Worker, East Limerick Primary Health Care Project Organisation: Ballyhoura Development CLG Location: Kilmallock, County Limerick Part-Time Job Details: Reporting to: Line Manager as appointed by the CEO of Ballyhoura Development Responsible for: To play a key role in the delivery of the Traveller Primary Health Care Project in East Limerick, through the provision of peer health education in order to improve the overall health and well-being of Travellers in the area. Key Responsibilities: Community Health Initiatives Involved in the development of Traveller-specific community health initiatives, based on evidence-based approaches and good practice. Providing peer-led health information and education to the local Traveller Community. Providing information on the health service and how to access health services. Providing general information on health issues. Supporting, motivating, affirming/ empowering Travellers around health issues. Encouraging attendance at medical and health related clinics, appointments and activities. Identification of the health needs in the local Traveller Community. Linking with Services Meeting with health and other service providers to explain the role of the Community Health Worker and to identify working linkages. Meeting with health and other service providers to explain and discuss the health needs of Travellers and to work with them to ensure that services are culturally appropriate. Bringing feedback to service providers on making services more accessible. Participation in relevant Community and Interagency Fora Ensuring that the Traveller voice is represented. Participating in relevant Traveller health fora/ meetings as identified. Participating in other local/ community inter-agency groups, as identified. Cultural Awareness Training Involved in the design, planning and delivery of cultural awareness and cultural competency training to service providers in partnership with HSE THU staff. Overall Duties To work as part of the overall PHCP Team, undertaking joint work as identified. Building and maintain trust with the local Community and service providers. Respecting confidentiality in relation to the role of the CHW and the PHCP. Engaging in on-going training, development and reflective practice. To keep records of work carried out and report on same to the PHCP Co-ordinator. To undertake any other duties relevant to the post as directed by the PHCP Co-ordinator. Person Specification Applicants must be a member of the Traveller Community. Experience of undertaking peer work with the Traveller Community. An understanding of the issues impacting on Travellers, especially in relation to health, well-being and equality. Good communication skills. An interest in health promotion and wellness. An ability to be flexible and to work as part of a team. Commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of Travellers in East Limerick. Essential Experience Experience of working with the Traveller Community using peer-led approaches. Experience in the development and delivery of community health initiatives. Experience of keeping work records and reporting on the work. Desirable Knowledge of computers. Clean driving licence and access to a car. Skills: Member of the Traveller Community Computer Skills Good Communication Skills Terms & Conditions This position is a part-time post. The person is expected to work 12 hours per week over 3 days (4 hours per day). The Position is based in Coote Hall, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick. The successful candidate will be required to undergo Garda Vetting. Salary - paid monthly in arrears.
