HISTORIC GRAVES LIMERICK 2022 TO COMMENCE IN MARCH!

Developed by Ballyhoura Development and supported by Limerick and Cork LCDCs through LEADER funding, the Historic Graves 2022 training project is now commencing in East Limerick!

This project provides up-skilling and training for members of local community groups interested in recording their historic graveyards and the stories associated with them. The course is facilitated by Eachtra Heritage.

Since 1996 Eachtra has conducted archaeological training and surveying projects throughout Ireland.

What's involved?

The timetable for the first surveys are as follows:

Rathjordan: 21st March

Templebredon: 22nd March

Galbally Main Graveyard: 28th – 29th March

Fedamore: 7th – 8th April

Surveying takes place from 10am to approx. 3pm.

Background Information on the Project:

During 2020-2021 the project surveyed North Cork sites from Charleville to Mitchelstown as well as Limerick sites around the Kilmallock area. During this time we discovered some interesting connections between past and present experiences of sickness.

We found graves and recorded stories about fever hospitals and the Cholera outbreaks of the 1930s. This was a driver of emigration at the time and it is interesting that community members uncovered links with relatives now based in North America whose shared ancestors would have departed Ireland around this time. We will continue to paint this picture of shared experience as we move across East Limerick.

Interested in Taking Part?

Participants can join for a day, a community, or are welcome to follow the surveys around as we piece together stories from a shared history and remember our ancestors. To take part or for more information, contact David Whyte on [email protected] or 085 1813344.
