On May 7th, representatives from the Electoral Commission visited Kilmallock to talk about the upcoming elections.

On June 7th, elections for Local Councillors, European Parliament, and Limerick's directly elected Mayor will take place.

The Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ms Justice Marie Baker and their CEO, Art O'Leary joined members of the East Limerick Primary Healthcare Team and the Traveller Community for a discussion on the importance of voting in the upcoming elections.

Topics of Discussion:

  • Attendees learnt about how important it is to place the correct order on ballot papers, as well as how to check the register.
  • There was a discussion about the underrepresentation of Irish Travellers in elections and how there should be better political and voting education at secondary school level to prepare young people.
  • Attendees also learnt how a candidate can be nominated to run for local elections, and how the collective voice of a community could make a big impact on local elections.

We were fortunate to be joined by John Cooke of RTE Radio 1 Drive Time for interviews, a clip of Drive Time featuring local community members can be heard by clicking the link below.
