Glenbrohane, like many other rural Irish villages, has been in decline for many years. With the closure of the local shop and pub; everyday spaces that once provided a place and opportunity for neighbours and friends to physically meet up became few and far between.

Glenbrohane has witnessed the consequences and impact of mental health on community members. To tackle these issues, the community of Glenbrohane came together in 2016 to chart a way forward and the plan to develop a community Hub emerged.  In 2017, The Local Hub Committee acquired the old Sliabh Riadh pub with the wonderful dream of transforming it into a new community facility.

What is The Local Hub?

The Local Hub will open its doors in summer 2021. The Hub will become the new focal point for community life in Glenbrohane; it will also provide a welcoming space for visitors to this beautiful scenic area on the side of the Siabh Riadh Mountain. The “Grub at the Hub” café and shop make it the perfect place to relax and have tea or lunch with friends or just pop by to get some essential groceries or browse through the local crafts and produce.

The main Hub building will be a multi-purpose space containing a café and dining/relaxation area and kitchen along with meeting, training and treatment rooms. The Hub will be the location of weekly training courses and social events and generally provide a welcoming space where community members and visitors can relax over a cup of tea.

There will be a separate multi-functional building to the rear of the site called “The Hobby House”. The Hobby House will host training courses and give the Men’s Shed and She Shed a base location. Between these two buildings, there will also be an outdoor area with seating and a car park.

The Hub will also offer a large number of additional ancillary services aimed at promoting positive mental health and well being.

The vision for the Hub is to create a community resource that will address rural/social isolation in the Glenbrohane area.

Any support no matter how big or small is appreciated! We look forward to welcoming you to the Hub soon!
