CITICESS MASTERCLASS - Relational Welfare and Community Welfare Theme: Social Inclusion within the European Project CITICESS. Join us for the first session of our five-part Masterclass series, designed to progressively guide participants along the path from a basis to in-depth knowledge of Social Inclusion methods and tools. The Masterclass will explore the thoughts behind the "Staircase to Staircase" innovative welfare project in Aarhus Denmark and the Poverty Aware Social Work Paradigm. Speakers & Featuring Projects: Dr. Hilary Cottam OBE: A social entrepreneur, thinker, and policy advisor. Her acclaimed book Radical Help (pub. 2018) was hailed as ‘mind-shifting’ by David Brooks in the New York Times. It has been translated internationally and is widely credited with shifting national narratives and practice around welfare systems. Her current research and practice centres on the future of work and on new care economies. Hilary holds an Honorary Professorship at the Institute of Innovation and Public Purpose at UCL; she was named UK Designer of the Year in 2005 for pioneering the field of social design and has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. www.hilarycottam.com. "Staircase to Staircase" aims to improve the lives of families in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The project is based on a relational approach, meaning that it focuses on building strong relationships between families and social workers. The project was initiated in 2019 by Aarhus Municipality and the non-profit organization SUS in the Gellerup neighborhood. It is funded by the A.P. Møller Foundation. Work is underway to start the staircase to staircase project in two other Aarhus neighbourhoods. The project provides families with a wide range of support services, including: Job coaching Educational support Parenting support Health and well-being support Staircase to Staircase has been evaluated by a team of researchers from Aarhus University. The evaluation found that the project has had a positive impact on the lives of families in Gellerup. Families who have participated in the project have reported improvements in their employment, education, and health. They have also reported feeling more connected to their community. Federica Vezzoli: A social worker. She is currently attending a PhD in Social Work and Personal Social Services at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. Her research focus is about poverty and the professional practices of social workers. She is also interested in Community Social Work. In 2022 she had the opportunity to spend a visiting period at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev and to study the Poverty Aware Social Work Paradigm, a paradigmatic way of thinking about social work with people in poverty that has been developed by Michal Krumer – Nevo. The Poverty Aware Social Work Paradigm (PAP) is a paradigmatic way of thinking about social work with people in poverty that has been developed through 30 years in Israel. The PAP perceives the social work profession as a means of social criticism, not as an objective or neutral system of expertise and transforms the ways in which social workers think about and work with people in poverty. The uniqueness of the paradigm lies in the connections that it makes between poverty as a material predicament and poverty as an emotional and relational experience, as well as in its integration of the ways in which social work sees, knows and commits itself to people in poverty.” (Krumer – Nevo, pag. 1, 2020).
