Ballyhoura Development, as a partner of the AquaCOM project, had an open call application in June for Early Adopters to join this programme alongside communities and groups from Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

In total 16 applications for early adopters where approved, of which four will be supported to develop Aquathermal Energy Project for communities in Ireland. These early adopters will receive hands-on mentoring and technical support to develop a viable Aquathermal energy implementation plan in their area. They will also have the opportunity to participate in pilot site visits, masterclasses and training initiatives online and in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Participating Irish Communities

In the process of selecting the Irish early adopters, Ballyhoura Development assessed and consulted with 11 candidate communities for project potential. The process resulted in the selection of four strong candidates;

  • Croom Community Development Association in Croom Co. Limerick
  • Glenstal Abbey Sustainable Energy Community in Murroe Co. Limerick
  • Kylemore Trust in Connemara Co. Galway
  • Synergy Credit Union Sustainable Energy Community in Fermoy Co. Cork

These four communities will be joining the other 12 communities from Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands at our first Masterclass on the Island of Vlieland. Here they will be support to start the development of Aquathermal Energy projects for their communities, as well as visit a pilot site in Vlieland's harbour, where heat will be extracted from seawater.

Ballyhoura Development would like to thank all communities that showed an interest, congratulate these four communities on their selection and welcome them to the project.
