Did you know that suicide is the 4th leading cause of death among young people worldwide?

Ballyhoura Development (BD) delivers a wide variety of programmes and projects and is working to ensure that all activities contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today we are going to look closer at Ballyhoura Development’s work around Good Health and Wellbeing, Goal 3 of the SDGs.

This global goal aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for people of all ages.

Ballyhoura Development is specifically working towards Target 3.4 'By 2030, to reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.'

This target is important, as more than 700,000 people across the world, die due to suicide every year, and it is the fourth leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29 (World Health Organisation, 2023).

What can you do?

  • Attend a workshop so you can better look after your own mental health, or recommend a workshop to a friend, such as one of the workshops from Mid-West Aries. Mid West ARIES (Mid West Advancing Recovery in Ireland Education Service) work with communities in Limerick, Clare & North Tipperary to provide an educational programme on mental health recovery & well-being. Anyone over the age of 18 with an interest in mental health and well-being can sign up for their courses.

  • Did you know that you can request FREE SafeTALK training for your local community group, business group or staff? SafeTALK is a half-day suicide alertness training that prepares attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. SafeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. SafeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks. Contact [email protected] to find out more.

Further information about all of Ballyhoura Development’s workshops, and links to register, are available on our Events page.
